Surcharge FAQs

Common questions about carrier surcharges

What is a fuel surcharge and how much does it cost?
A fuel surcharge is a percentage added on top of your base shipping rate, indexed weekly to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) average retail diesel price. FedEx and UPS both publish weekly fuel surcharge tables — rates have typically ranged from 10% to 25% of the base rate depending on diesel prices. LMS Core FinalFare pricing includes no fuel surcharge, ever.
What is a residential delivery surcharge?
FedEx and UPS charge a per-package fee on every delivery to a residential address. In 2025 both carriers published residential surcharges around $6.40 per package. Because most e-commerce deliveries go to homes, this is one of the largest surcharge line items for shippers. LMS Core FinalFare has no residential surcharge.
What is a Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS)?
A Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS) is a per-package fee applied to shipments delivered to or picked up from ZIP codes the carrier defines as a delivery area. FedEx and UPS each maintain their own lists of DAS-eligible ZIP codes, and neither list is the same. In 2025, published DAS rates ran roughly $5.15–$5.55 per package. LMS Core FinalFare has no DAS.
What is an Extended Delivery Area Surcharge (EDAS)?
Extended Delivery Area Surcharges (EDAS) — sometimes called Remote Area Surcharges — are a second tier above DAS for the most rural and frontier ZIP codes. They can reach $12 or more per package on top of any standard DAS. LMS Core FinalFare has no EDAS.
What is a peak surcharge?
FedEx and UPS apply temporary peak or demand surcharges during high-volume periods, typically October through January each year. They publish separate peak surcharge tables each fall, and the amounts have reached $5–$7 per package or more in recent years. LMS Core FinalFare never adds a peak surcharge.
What is FinalFare pricing?
FinalFare is LMS Core's all-in pricing model: on LMS Core, the rate you see is the rate you pay. There is no fuel surcharge, no residential surcharge, no DAS or EDAS, no peak or demand surcharge — ever. This makes LMS Core invoices predictable and simple to reconcile.
How accurate is this surcharge calculator?
This calculator uses publicly published FedEx and UPS surcharge rates to estimate your monthly surcharge exposure based on your volume and shipment profile. Actual costs depend on your negotiated carrier agreement, current weekly fuel surcharge tables, and the specific ZIP codes you ship to. Treat this as a directional estimate and verify with your carrier rep. LMS surcharges are always $0.
